SPANISH 201-202 ADVANCED INTERMEDIATE SPANISH

Prof.:
Rosa M. Sánchez Ferreiras          rms6u@virginia.edu
Pedro Larrea Rubio               pl5h@virginia.edu

Prerequisites:  Spanish 102 or 106, SAT II Test score of 520-590, or Placement Test score of 326-409.

1. Description

Spanish 201 and 202 are a three credit intermediate level course each, the third and fourth courses in a four-course sequence which fulfills the language requirement.  The goal of these courses is to bridge the gap between elementary and advanced levels in the further development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

Location and schedule: The course will meet in Aula 4 (35) and Aula AN2 (35), five days a week (Monday--Friday) from 8:40am-10:30pm and 10:45-12:35pm, consisting of 80 classroom hours.

2. Grade Breakdown

Participation & Quizzes                                                     15%
Tests                                                                              30%
Final exam                                                                      20%
Compositions                                                                   10%
Homework                                                                       10%
Oral exam                                                                       15%

  • Participation (10%) and pop quizzes (5%).  Your attendance, daily preparation, and active participation in class will not only contribute to your learning, but are also important factors in determining your grade.  Students are expected to bring all materials, including textbook and workbook, and to participate in Spanish only during each class period.  The instructor will monitor student participation on a daily basis.  You will lose points for speaking in English during class.  Frequent pop quizzes administered at the beginning of class will also factor into your participation grade.  Lateness to or absence from a pop quiz will result in an F. No food, drink or gum will be allowed in class.  No cell phones and no laptops may be used during class.
  • Tests (30%) and final exam (20%).  There will be 3 partial tests and a final exam.  There are no make-up exams.  Exams may be rescheduled only if the student has an official excuse (severe illness, serious personal-familial problem) approved by the program director, Dr. Eliseo Valle, and if arrangements have been made prior to the exam.  Failure to attend the final exam results in an F for the course.
  • Compositions (10%).  There will be two (2) graded compositions (use of a dictionary is allowed).  These will be corrected by the instructor using symbols, and then rewritten by the student guided by the symbols.  Composition grades are based on the use of grammar and vocabulary studied in the course as well as content, organization, and style.  The grades for the compositions will be based on both the first draft and the rewritten final version.
  • Homework (10%).  All assignments from the workbook must be self-corrected in a different color ink using the answer key in the back and handed in as indicated on the syllabus.  Students are also required to complete the exercises that accompany each reading assigned by their instructor and to come to class prepared to actively discuss each reading assignment.  Homework that is incomplete or handed in late will not be accepted.
  • Oral Exam (15%).  There will be a final oral exam at the end of the semester.  Students will role-play a situation in pairs.  The topics will be similar to the pair and group activities practiced throughout the summer.  Lateness to or absence from the oral exam on the date scheduled will result in an F.
  • with any questions or concerns.

Course Policies

  • Spanish only will be spoken in the Hispanic Studies Center.
  • The Honor Code.  Spanish 201/202 students are expected to comply with the Honor Code established by the Hispanic Studies in Spain program, as well as the UVA Honor Code.  All work is to be pledged and completed by the student without assistance from classmates, advanced Spanish students, or native speakers, unless otherwise indicated by the instructor.  Work already submitted in another class is not permitted.  Non-compliance with any of these policies will result in the loss of credits for the course in question.  Any violations of the Code in or outside class will not only be brought to the attention of the program director, but violations of any UVA student may also also be brought to the UVA Honor Council for appropriate action.
  • Attendance and Tardiness.  Attendance is obligatory for Spanish 201/202.  In order for students to progress in their understanding and speaking of Spanish, they must be exposed to hearing and speaking it on a regular basis. You are allowed one (1) free absence. Beyond that, for each additional absence, five percentage points (on a 100 point scale) will be deducted from your final grade (e.g. a 95 [A] will become a 90 [A-]). Students are expected to arrive to class on time. Being late to class counts as half an absence. Recurrent absences and a proven and permanent lack of interest may result in the loss of the right to claim credit for the course.  Any activity the teachers assign will be considered obligatory.
  • Assignment Deadlines,   Assignments are due at the beginning of class as indicated on the syllabus.  No late work and no make-up work will be accepted. Students who will not be in class should either turn in their assignment ahead of time or have a friend turn it in before class.

Your responsibility: You are expected to come to class having prepared the material on the syllabus for that day and ready to participate actively in class. Class will be conducted only in Spanish.  It is your responsibility to let your instructor know if you do not understand and to consult him/her during office hours
